Delray Beach asks artists to design piece for new plaza

7:47 p.m. EST, February 15, 2010

It wouldn't be a Delray Beach project if it didn't have art.

So, with that in mind, the Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Agency is asking artists to design a sculpture or artistic element for the public plaza under construction at West Atlantic and Southwest Fifth avenues.

The CRA is seeking a piece that will reflect the history and cultural heritage of Historic Fifth Avenue, an area originally settled by African-Americans. The CRA has set aside $15,000 toward the art feature.

Applicants must be at least 18. Applications and proposals will be reviewed by a selection committee, which will give preference to Palm Beach County artists. The Public Arts Advisory Board will make recommendations to the CRA Board, which will make the final selection.

Qualifications must be submitted to the CRA office by 2 p.m. March 3. To download a copy of the application or to request information, go to or call 561-276-8640.
